Dentures are a tried and true option to replace missing teeth and improve your smile. However, when you think of dentures do you imagine the false teeth your grandmother used to wear? The good news is that technology has improved dentures and now they are more comfortable to wear and look more like natural teeth than ever before.

There are several options for patients considering dentures. Conventional dentures are made when the teeth have already been removed from the mouth and the healing process has begun to take effect. It takes between 8 and 12 weeks before the dentures are ready for placement.

Immediate dentures allow the patient to have his or her dentures placed in the mouth immediately after the teeth are removed. While not having to be without teeth is a benefit, gums and bones change over time so this option could require more adjustments. Typically, this is a temporary solution to be used while the conventional dentures are being made.

Many people think of dentures as a full set of upper or lower teeth, or both. However, partial dentures are used when the patient still has at least one tooth remaining in the upper or lower jaw. This partial denture is removable and is made up of replacement teeth that are secured to a plastic base. The base is connected by metal framework that holds the denture into place. The dentist then cements the partial denture, or a permanent bridge, into place. This option is effective for patients not only to fill gaps in their teeth, but it also keeps other teeth from shifting. In addition to partial dentures that are permanent, there are options for a precision partial denture that is removable and attaches to adjacent teeth.

Finally, dental implants can be used and eliminate dentures altogether. Implants are usually more expensive, but offer patients a more natural look and feel.
