Colton’s History
Before the Spanish influence, the Colton area was home to the Tongva, Serrano, and Cahuilla communities. The Tongva village of Homhoangna, situated near the base of the foothills of Reche Canyon, now Colton, had historical significance, as it was derived from the Tongva language word “homhoabit,” meaning “hilly place.”
In 1839, Antonio María Lugo was granted the right to settle the Rancho San Bernardino, encompassing present-day Colton. During the Mission Era, Mission San Gabriel established a settlement named Politana in 1810, just northeast of Colton. By 1840, Colton was part of the private ranchos Jurupa and San Bernardino Rancho. The southwest area, known as “Agua Mansa” (Gentle Waters), was settled by pioneers from New Mexico in 1842. Cooley Ranch, originally known as Indian Knolls, provided refuge during the flood of 1862.
George Cooley of Kent, England, became the property owner in 1854, and by 1873, it had expanded to 400 acres. The city was named after David Douty Colton, a brigadier general of the California State Militia and later the vice president of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. Colton took its modern form in 1875 with the construction of the Southern Pacific Railway, leading to its incorporation in 1887.
The town witnessed a historic conflict at Colton Crossing between the Southern Pacific Transportation Company and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway when both sought passage through the town.
