A Brief History of Redlands
Redlands is a city with a population of over 73,000, but the area was originally inhabited by the Cahuilla people. Spanish exploration sought to bring Catholicism and the Spanish crown’s rule to the indigenous people, and a Franciscan mission outpost was built in the early 1800s. The land passed into the custody of the Mexican government after the Mexican War of Independence.
Mormon pioneers reached the area in 1851 and purchased Rancho San Bernardino, where they established a prosperous farming community. They only stayed six years before returning to Utah, and Benjamin Barton purchased a thousand acres from them and planted vineyards and built a winery.
The railroad arrived in the 1880s, connecting Redlands to San Francisco and Salt Lake and setting off a land boom. Speculators flooded the area and the city was established by a civil engineer and a New York stock broker in 1888. That same decade, the first orange grove was planted in the city, and it reigned as the center of the largest navel orange-producing region in the world for 75 years.
