Redlands area dentist explains a root-form endosseous implant

If you find yourself in a situation where you have lost a tooth or several teeth, you are probably interested in your options for replacement. Now, more than ever, patients have a choice when it comes to restoring lost teeth. In the past, patients could only choose from dental bridges or dentures. While both of these restorations still have their applications, many want a permanent option. At Dr. Vines Redlands area practice, we offer dental implants as a natural-looking and permanent solution to missing teeth.

Dental implants provide a greater sense of confidence than alternatives. There is no fear of the restoration slipping out of place, or even falling out. With dental implants, patients can enjoy all of their favorite foods and smile without worry.

The most common type of dental implant is the root-form or endosseous implants. These implants resemble screws and they are surgically placed directly into the jawbone. In order for patients to be candidates for dental implants, there must be sufficient bone structure. During the consultation process, Dr. Vines will evaluate the condition of the bone to determine eligibility.

The implant process is completed in phases. During the first phase, the implant is placed and left to heal for several months. During this healing process, the jawbone will fuse around the implant. Patients will then return to the office for the second appointment. During this appointment, the implant is exposed and then abutment and final restoration can be placed. Depending on the amount of teeth missing and the number of implants, the final restoration may be a crown, bridge, or dentures.

The implant procedures are performed in-office while the patient is comfortably sedated and the area is numb. Recovery is often based on how many implants are placed. Patients who receive a single implant may be back to normal daily activities the following day. Patients who receive multiple implants or require bone grafts may need several days of recovery after the initial implant procedure. Pain medications may be prescribed to help with the recovery time.
