How to improve dental health

Dental health is important. Many patients are not aware of how it can affect the health and wellness of the rest of the body. It is firmly believed—and proven with studies—that patients with poor oral health are putting themselves at risk for a myriad of medical conditions that affect their wellness. The bacteria associated with gum disease can carry through the bloodstream to the rest of the body, causing infection and inflammation in other organs. This can result in a higher risk for problems such as diabetes, strokes, and heart disease.

Because of the oral systemic connection, Dr. Terry Vines and the team of Pure Gold Professionals in Dentistry believes in educating patients on the risks they may be incurring due to poor oral health. He takes the time to speak to patients about how they can improve and maintain their dental health. Here are just a few tips that he strongly suggests patients take to heart and consider for better health and wellness of not only the smile, but the body!

Eat right

Reducing sugars and acids in your diet is one way to improve your oral health and wellness dramatically. Sodas and candies are some of the most common culprits. Dr. Terry Vines suggests patients consider avoiding many of these treats altogether, or at least reducing their consumption. Patients who do drink sodas and eat candy may also want to ensure they brush or rinse promptly.

Proper oral hygiene

Brushing and flossing after every meal can ensure better oral health. Patients can ask their dentist how to properly brush and floss their teeth for better results. Most individuals will benefit by using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Some patients may even improve their brushing’s effectiveness by using electric toothbrushes.

Maintain recall visits

Visiting the dentist regularly for examinations and cleanings is also pertinent. Patients with periodontal disease, or a higher risk of cavities and gum disease, are encouraged to see Dr. Terry Vines more than the standard “twice a year” to ensure they are maintaining their dental health. Catching problems early can be done with the help of a dental professional.
