Pediatric Dentistry care for Redlands, CA area residents

Pediatric dentistry focuses on oral health and wellness for our youngest patients. The ultimate goal is lifetime of oral health without the need for extensive restorations. The way we accomplish this is through early education and prevention. We view the dentist – parent relationship as a partnership. By working together, we can help educate your children on the importance of brushing and flossing, while you work to emphasize the message at home.

Most parents are on board with brushing their child’s teeth every morning and evening. The challenge is when it comes to flossing. Many parents do not floss every day; so as a result, flossing is not part of their children’s daily oral hygiene.

How important is flossing really?

With all of the new and improved toothpastes available in grocery stores, many parents begin to wonder if flossing is that important. To answer this question, we must first look at what happens during brushing.

Brushing teeth works to remove bacteria and plaque from the teeth. When we eat, the bacteria found naturally in our mouth feed on the sugars in the food. This process produces plaque, a sticky substance that builds up on teeth. Plaque that is not removed will eventually turn into tartar and cause cavities. While brushing does a good job of removing food particles and plaque on the surfaces of the teeth, the bacteria can still be lurking in the tiny crevices between teeth and along the gum line. Flossing removes these hard to reach bacteria that cannot be removed with brushing alone.

But they are just baby teeth

So, now that you know why flossing is important for adults, why is it as important for baby teeth? In addition to painful tooth decay or cavities, plaque buildup can cause inflammation of healthy gum tissue. This condition, called gingivitis can eventually breakdown the bone structure and irreversibly affect oral health.

We know that ultimately you want to the best for your kids, which is why encourage all of our parents to emphasize the importance of flossing. If you are in the Redlands area, and would like to learn more about helping your child have a healthy mouth, call us today at 909-435-4558.
