Redlands residents ask, "What is the best treatment option for missing teeth?"

If you are missing teeth and you would like to see your smile restored, you might benefit greatly from dental implants. Dental Implants are a durable, functional, natural-looking, and long lasting solution that more and more patients are choosing over bridges or dentures. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made out of titanium that are surgically placed into the jawbone.

The consultation

Before receiving implants, patients can come into our office for a medical history review and comprehensive exam. Dr. Vines will evaluate the mouth to determine if your mouth is free of disease and healthy enough for dental implants. Issues such as tooth decay and gum disease will need to be addressed prior to receiving implants. In addition, patients receiving dental implants require significant bone structure in their jaw. If your bone structure is insufficient due to disease or trauma, bone grafting may be necessary before you are a candidate for dental implants. CT Scans and X-rays are usually taken during this appointment.

The implant procedure

Patients will be anesthetized prior to receiving treatment. Once the implant is surgically placed into the bone, a temporary crown or healing collar will be placed to allow the implant time to heal. During this process, called osseointegration, the jawbone will grow around the implant, fusing together and creating a strong foundation for a restoration. Once this process is complete, which can take several months, patients return to the office for the placement of their permanent crown.

Post treatment

Patients can return to normal daily activities within 24 hours of their implant procedures. Patients may experience some pain and prescription pain relievers are available on an as-needed basis. Once the implant is healed and covered with a restoration, patients are left with a fully functioning and beautiful smile.

Dental implants do not require specialized care. Patients should make sure to brush at least twice daily and floss once each day to keep the mouth free of food particles and plaque. On occasion, crowns can become cracked or chipped. This will not typically affect your implant.
