Today, upwards of 50 percent of the population has some form of gum disease. This is not because of a lack of care, but may stem instead from a lack of awareness and understanding. Our motto is that it’s best to avoid complicated conditions rather than to deal with their results.

Approaching periodontal disease with the most appropriate form of treatment is a priority in our Redlands practice. During routine check-ups, Dr. Vines pays close attention to gum tissue as well as teeth, looking for plaque buildup and irritation. The goal is to work with patients during these routine visits to catch any signs of gum disease in its earliest stage, which is gingivitis. What many people still don’t know is that gingivitis is a form of gum disease that is reversible. Combating harmful bacteria in this early phase helps patients avoid the costly complications that come from advanced periodontal disease.

Costly applies to the money spent on periodontal disease treatment and on the toll this condition can have on the body. When bacteria thrive in unhealthy oral conditions, the body is more susceptible to uncontrolled blood sugar, heart attack, respiratory disease, stroke, digestive disorders, and osteoporosis, to name a few. Considering the potential effect on serious health conditions, it makes even more sense to take steps to avoid the development and advancement of gum disease.

Understanding the causes, signs, and impact of gum disease is the first step towards treatment. Without this information, there is very little motivation to maintain daily brushing and flossing as recommended by your dentist.

We advise our patients to brush for two full minutes, twice every day. Following brushing, flossing should always be carefully performed, addressing every space between teeth. For added protection, an anti-bacterial oral rinse can complete the daily oral hygiene routine.

In addition to taking the best possible care of teeth and gums at home, it is important to receive regular professional evaluations so that any formation of plaque or tartar can be immediately removed.
